Privacy notice
Last updated 22 September 2026
This notice explains what Electra collects, why, and the choices you have. It follows the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
Who we are and our commitment
Electra is a civic technology platform operated by CVICK Initiative to provide Nigerian citizens with accurate, neutral, and accessible electoral information.
We are committed to safeguarding your privacy in strict accordance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023 and the regulatory directives of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
For any privacy inquiries or to reach our Data Protection team, contact hello@electrang.app.
Data minimisation (Section 24 NDPA)
This notice and our terms of use can be read without signing in. To use the app itself — the candidate directory, polling unit search, guides and updates — you sign in once with a phone number or a Google account.
In line with the principle of data minimisation under Section 24(1)(c) of the NDPA 2023, that is all we ask for. Anything further, such as a WhatsApp number for election alerts, is optional and only collected if you switch it on.
Strict neutrality and sensitive personal data (Section 30 NDPA)
Under Section 30 of the NDPA 2023, political beliefs, opinions, and affiliations are classified as Sensitive Personal Data. Electra holds an absolute commitment to voter confidentiality and political neutrality.
We never ask for, record, track, or profile your voting intentions or party preferences. Which candidates or guides you view remains completely anonymous and is never attached to your account or phone number.
We will never sell, rent, or disclose your contact information to any political party, campaign organization, government entity, or commercial advertiser.
What data we collect and why
Identity and contact data: Your mobile phone number or Google account, collected solely to authenticate your session and transmit security one-time passwords (OTPs).
Device location (optional): If you choose to grant location permission, your coordinates are processed solely on your device to calculate distance to nearby polling units. Your location is never stored on our database or associated with your identity.
Technical telemetry: Anonymized operational logs (browser type, error metrics) necessary to safeguard system integrity and prevent fraudulent abuse.
Lawful basis for processing (Section 25 NDPA)
Consent: We rely on your clear, affirmative consent when you sign in or subscribe to WhatsApp election day reminders. You may withdraw this consent at any time.
Legitimate civic interest: We process basic technical and security telemetry to protect the integrity of the platform against cyber threats and ensure uninterrupted civic access.
Your statutory rights as a data subject (Sections 34–38 NDPA)
Under the NDPA 2023, you are entitled to comprehensive rights regarding your personal information:
• Right of access: Request a copy of any personal data Electra holds about you.
• Right to rectification: Correct or update any incomplete or inaccurate records.
• Right to erasure: Request the permanent deletion of your account and phone number at any time.
• Right to object or restrict: Object to specific processing or restrict how your information is handled.
• Right to withdraw consent: Withdraw your consent for notifications or account storage as easily as it was given, with immediate effect.
To exercise any of these rights, email your request to hello@electrang.app. We respond to all verified requests promptly within statutory timelines.
Security, sub-processors, and retention
Your personal data is encrypted in transit and at rest using modern encryption standards. Only authorized civic administrators with a strict duty of confidentiality have access to operational systems.
Sign-in OTPs and election alerts are transmitted through trusted telecommunication and WhatsApp messaging partners, who receive only the necessary contact details to deliver the specific message.
We retain account details only as long as you maintain an active profile. Verification OTPs expire automatically within minutes.
Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) oversight
You have the right to lodge a complaint with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) if you believe your personal data has been handled inconsistently with the law.
